If you’re looking for a French Bulldog puppy in the UK, the right questions protect you (and the puppy) for life. This checklist covers what to ask a breeder, what paperwork to expect, and how to set your puppy up for calm, confident behaviour in the first week at home.
1) Before you enquire: what ‘ethical breeding’ should look like
Health testing and vet checks you can see in writing
Clear information on parents’ temperament and living conditions
Puppies raised in a home environment with everyday sounds and handling
A breeder who asks YOU questions too (lifestyle, experience, plans)
2) Questions to ask any French Bulldog breeder
Can I see the puppy with mum, and where they’re raised day-to-day?
What health checks have been done, and what’s included in the puppy pack?
What socialisation have you already started (children, noises, handling)?
What support do you offer after collection (training/behaviour advice)?
3) Week 1 training: the calm-start routine
The first week is about safety, predictability, and preventing bad habits. Keep it simple:
Sleep: crate or safe pen in a quiet spot; short, calm bedtime routine
Toilet: take out after sleep, play, food; reward immediately
Biting: redirect to a chew; end play for 10–20 seconds if teeth touch skin
Handling: gentle daily practice (paws, ears, collar) paired with treats
